Overview of the Project

The high-clearance replacement rail tunnel will expand the Detroit-Windsor region's role as an intermodal freight hub between Atlantic ports and Midwestern markets.

Replacing the century-old rail tunnel with a high-clearance border connection is expected to add momentum for other transportation infrastructure improvements on each side of the Detroit River. The focus on rail freight recognizes that mode's increasing appeal as a fuel-efficient, consistently reliable and "greener" alternative to shipping over highways.

Government support will leverage private sector investments at the world's largest commercial crossing -- creating jobs, increasing efficiency and helping shippers compete globally.
